Njoro Forest

Duration Full day
Departs from Moshi
Best time Year-round. Muddy underfoot after rain.
What it involves

Approximately one hour outside Moshi town lies Njoro Forest. By bicycle or simply on foot, you explore the forest with a guide, where it's possible to spot colobus monkey, blue monkey and — if you're lucky — the rarely sighted Kirk's dik-dik, which also inhabits the national safari parks.

You also pass a rice plantation and the large tree known locally as the magical tree, which has stories attached to it. This is where most people stop for lunch, before heading back to Moshi town satisfied, muddy and in need of a cold drink.

Of the day trips out of Moshi this is the one that most rewards an interest in wildlife rather than scenery, and the bicycle option makes it a genuinely active day.

Booking this trip

Day trips are quoted individually, because the cost depends on how many of you there are and where you are starting from. Transport, a guide and entry fees where they apply are arranged for you — tell us your dates and we will come back with a price and what it covers.

Most of these work well on an arrival or departure day, or as a rest day either side of a Kilimanjaro climb.

The day

A forest walk close to town

Njoro is the gentlest and closest of the walking day trips, which is exactly what makes it useful. The forest sits on Kilimanjaro's lower slopes near Rundugai, west of Moshi, and the drive takes well under an hour.

The walk follows a stream up through riverine forest, fig, wild date palm and dense undergrowth, to a waterfall in a narrow gorge. It is around an hour each way at an easy pace, on a path that crosses the water several times, and it's shaded almost the whole way, which matters on a hot day.

The falls themselves are smaller than Materuni's and the pool at the bottom is swimmable and much warmer, being spring-fed from the same system that feeds Chemka nearby.

Birdlife along the stream is the underrated part. The forest corridor holds species that the surrounding farmland doesn't, and a guide who knows them will find turacos, hornbills and kingfishers along the water.

It is often combined with Chemka, which is close by, to make a full day of water and forest instead of two half days.

Who it suits

When to choose Njoro over the others

Njoro is the right choice in three specific situations.

When the walking has to be easy. The path is gentle and shaded, there's no long climb out, and the total distance is modest. That makes it workable for older visitors, for children, and for anyone who has just come off Kilimanjaro and whose legs have opinions about hills.

When time is short. It is the closest of the five to Moshi, so it fits a half day comfortably, including an arrival morning or a departure afternoon.

When it's hot. The forest canopy makes it the most comfortable of the walking trips in the middle of the day, unlike the exposed rim at Lake Chala.

It isn't the trip for anyone who wants the dramatic version. Materuni's falls are far larger and the setting more spectacular, and if you can only do one waterfall day and can manage the climb, Materuni is the one.

Combined with Chemka in the same day, Njoro makes for a genuinely good outing.

Practical

What to bring

Shoes that can get wet, or that you don't mind getting wet. The path crosses the stream several times and there are no bridges.

Swimwear under your clothes if you intend to swim, and a towel.

Insect repellent. It is riverine forest and there are mosquitoes, particularly in the wet season.

A light rain layer. The lower slopes catch afternoon rain in most months.

Cash in small denominations for the local guide and any community fee.

Binoculars if birds interest you at all. Bring them for the stream corridor.

Allow three to four hours in total for a half day including the drive, or a full day if combined with Chemka.

A local guide is required and is arranged on site or in advance. The paths aren't signposted and the stream crossings change with the water level.

When to go

Season and timing

Njoro is the most weather-tolerant of the five day trips, because the canopy shelters most of the walk.

In the dry months the stream is lower and the crossings are easy. In the wet months the water rises, the crossings become genuine wading, and the falls run much harder. Neither version is bad. They're different days.

Because the walk is shaded almost throughout, Njoro is the most comfortable option in the hot months when Materuni's exposed sections and Chala's open rim are unpleasant.

Morning is better for birds, which are the underrated part of this trip. The stream corridor holds species the surrounding farmland doesn't, and the first two hours after sunrise are when they're active.

Afternoon showers are common on Kilimanjaro's lower slopes in most months. They are rarely a problem under the canopy but they make the path slick, so shoes with grip matter more than they look like they should.

The site is quiet on weekdays and rarely crowded even at weekends.

Worth knowing

The forest and the water

The forest at Njoro is riverine, not montane. It is a narrow corridor of trees following the water through country that's otherwise farmland and scrub. That structure is exactly why it holds the birds it does: the corridor concentrates species into a strip a few tens of metres wide.

The water comes from the same aquifer that feeds Chemka nearby, filtered through volcanic rock off Kilimanjaro. That is why it's clear and why the pool at the falls is warm, not cold. It is a very different swim from Materuni's snowmelt plunge pool.

Fig, wild date palm and dense undergrowth dominate the canopy, and the roots along the stream form the same kind of structures Chemka is known for on a smaller scale.

A local guide from the community leads the walk, which is how the community fee arrangement works and is also practical: the path is unmarked and the stream crossings change with the water level.

Vervet monkeys are common along the corridor, and the bird list includes turacos, hornbills and several kingfishers.

Practical

A short summary

Around an hour's walk each way on a shaded path with several stream crossings, a warm swimmable pool at the falls, and under an hour's drive from Moshi. It is the gentlest of the walking day trips and the most comfortable in hot weather.

Bring shoes that can get wet, swimwear under your clothes, insect repellent and cash in small denominations for the local guide and community fee. Carry binoculars. The riverine corridor holds bird species that the surrounding farmland doesn't.

Allow three to four hours for a half day including the drive, or make a full day of it by pairing with Chemka Hot Springs nearby. A walking morning and a swimming afternoon from the same base.

In short

Is Njoro worth it?

As a half day, and particularly when paired with Chemka, yes. It is close, shaded, gentle and quiet, and the birding along the stream corridor is genuinely good.

As the only waterfall day on a short trip, no. Materuni is larger, more dramatic and the coffee demonstration makes it a fuller day. Njoro's advantage is that it asks nothing of your legs.

Choose Njoro when the walking has to be easy, when it's hot, or when you have already climbed something and would rather not climb anything else.

One more thing

A note on the guide

A local guide from the community leads the walk. That is how the fee arrangement works and it's also practical: the path is unmarked and the stream crossings shift with the water level, so the route changes through the year.

Questions

About this day trip

How difficult is the Njoro walk?
Easy. Around an hour each way at a gentle pace, shaded almost the whole way, with several stream crossings and no long climb out.
Can you swim at Njoro?
Yes. The pool at the falls is spring-fed and much warmer than Materuni's, from the same system that feeds Chemka nearby.
Can Njoro be combined with Chemka?
Yes, and it's a common pairing. They're close together and the two make a full day of forest and water instead of two half days.
Is Njoro suitable for children or older visitors?
It is the gentlest of the walking trips here: short, shaded, and with no significant climb. That is the main reason to choose it over Materuni.
